Mr. Charles Simmons, 81, of Freeport, was born November 16, 1930, to William Miles and Lela Mae (Toole) Simmons in Graceville, Fl, and died Tuesday, October 30th, at Ft. Walton Beach Medical Center. After attending Freeport High School, Mr. Simmons served in the United States Air Force. While stationed in Washington, he met and married Virginia Hughes. Upon their return to Freeport, Charles worked for Wright Brothers Furniture and in later years was self-employed. He retired to his beloved Choctawhatchee River, where he was known to sit on the front porch and "watch the river flow."

Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Lela, and by brothers: Guy, Billy and Miles Simmons, by sister, Dell Martin and by the mother of his children, Virginia Simmons.

Mr. Simmons is survived by his companion and best friend, Johnnie McCormick of Bruce; children, Joey Simmons and wife Judy, Panama City; Charlene Meacham and husband Craig, Clinton, OK; Michael Simmons and wife Teresa, Freeport; Dara Ackeret and husband Dan, Medford, WI; Gary Lin Simmons, Freeport; Tommy Simmons, St. Petersburg, FL; and Charlie Simmons and wife Donna of Freeport. He is also survived by brothers, Joe Tom and Glenda Simmons, DeFuniak Springs; Wayne and Diane Simmons, Freeport; Hugh and Naomi Simmons, Freeport; sisters, Odessa and Jimmy Matthews, Westville; and Thelma and Izaias Camara, DeFuniak Springs. Mr. Simmons is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Family will be receiving friends from 10:30~11:30 AM, Thursday, November 1, 2012 at Clary-Glenn Funeral Home Chapel, 230 Park Avenue, DeFuniak Springs, Florida, 32435.

Burial will follow in Hatcher Cemetery at a later date.
