About Theobald, Jacob
According to Chadwick's History of Shelby Co., Ind. (page 645-646): Jacob Theobald was one of the "sturdy German citizens of Shelby County. He was born May 10, 1827, in Germany on the Rhine. His parents were George M. and Katherine (Haehl) Theobald, who were peasant farmers in the Fatherland, and came to the United States by way of New Orleans. They ascended to Cincinnati, and from there they came to Shelby county, and were among the pioneer German families in this section.... Jacob received his education in Germany before coming to America. After the arrival of the family he remained on the farm with his parents, and assisted in establishing the new homestead, which was an undertaking of no small proportions. The land had to be cleared and made ready for cultivation. The markets for produce were far away, but in the face of these difficulties they toiled bravely on until they became established in comfortable circumstances.... Mr. Theobald had devoted himself to farming with the exception of three years that he spent in Shelbyville. He is a Democrat and served for one term as Supervisor. He is a member of the German Evangelical church of Union township, which church he helped build.... [he] is held in high respect by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances."

Jacob Theobald, Well Known And Respected
Union Township Man Died Saturday Morning Of Paralysis

Jacob Theobald died at his residence in Union township at five-forty o'clock Saturday morning. Mr. Theobald had suffered several strokes of paralysis, the last occurring only a short time ago. The deceased was eighty-two years old and had lived in Shelby county since 1848. Mr. Theobald was an honest and respected citizen and by his thrift and industry had accumulated a large amount of land in Union township. Mr. Theobald leaves seven children to mourn his loss - John, Peter and August, and Mrs. Fred Gahimer, Mrs. Michael Gahimer, Mrs. Emma Worland and Mrs. Clara Hill. He is also survived by thirty-six grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren. The interment will take place in the German cemetery in Union township and the services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the German church of that township by the Rev. Winters, assisted by the Rev. G. L. Mann. The cortege will leave the house at one o'clock. D. B. Wilson & Son are the funeral directors in charge.
