Robert was the eldest son of James Edward MacKesson and Myrtle Davis MacKesson. Following the death of his mother, Robert and his siblings (Neal, Patti, and Jean Dorothea) were raised by J.E. and the second Mrs. MacKesson, Virginia Farrar MacKesson. The family owned the town newspaper and Robert worked there as a youth. He served in World War I. After the war, Robert served as a career police officer, served as escort/honor guardsman for the Governor of the State of Connecticut, and was a gunsmith, helping the local police department with their needs.
At age twenty eight, Robert married Miss Marguerite Warner. Together they had four children: Roberta MacKesson Smith, Barbara Alice "Babs" MacKesson, Stanley MacKesson, and Jean Marie MacKesson.
