MacKesson/McKesson
On the topic of the spelling of the name MacKesson/McKesson:
The letter a was dropped from use in the MacKesson name by siblings in Neal's generation. James Edward "J.E.",Neal's father, always spelled the last name as MacKesson. Robert, Neal's brother along with his siblings, changed to dropping the a in Mac, and then returned to use of "Mac", the last name as he had been raised spelling it, MacKesson.
Neal was the husband of Helen Meara McKesson.
Neal was raised in Lebanon, Missouri. Both he and his wife, Helen were descendents of Lebanon families, with Helen being the daughter of Harriet "Hattie" Bessie Luthy Meara and John Gregory Meara. The Meara family owned a lumberyard in St. Louis. Neal and Helen had one daughter, Harriet Lee "Patti" McKesson.
Neal was a tall, slender man who "ran track" as a young man at Lebanon High School.
The MacKesson family owned and published the Lebanon town newspaper for most of Neal's life, with family continuing to work there as long as Neal was alive. Friends and associates were those from Lebanon society, especially those associated with the newspaper. Harold Bell Wright and wife Frances were among those who were friends as were the Donnelly family. Farrar family relatives, Luthy family and many other relatives kept the McKesson family and young people busy. Bennett Springs was a favorite place for the McKessons. Neal enjoyed Model T cars and the family was engaged in local, state and national politics.
Mrs. MacKesson was County Leader in Suffragette efforts and Grandfather (Samuel Farrar) was First Mayor of reorganized Lebanon. Sam and Ben Farrar also owned Farrar Drugs, the local Drugstore. James Edward MacKesson, Neal's father, had been Prosecuting Attorney and was in private practice of law as well as owned the newspaper where Neal and Robert worked.
Neal was fascinated with world travel and relatives of the MacKesson and Farrar families made a practice of travelling overseas for ranching opportunities and to "see the sights". Neal had the desire to travel around the world and he and wife Helen often did that. As a young man, he and brother, Robert, travelled. Neal and his wife Helen (Meara) always had strong family ties in Lebanon, Missouri. Neal considered Lebanon, Missouri his home and frequently brought wife, Helen, and daughter, "Patti", for visits to the MacKesson home, newspaper, or outings with cousins, parents, etc. at Bennett Springs.
When Neal and his siblings were young, the Model T was just becoming popular and Neal and friends enjoyed cars, the train going through Lebanon, and the marvels of travel. Neal enjoyed growing up in Lebanon and he, along with his siblings, participated in Lebanon High School sports and the swimming, picnics, and outings of the local young people in Lebanon at that time.
As an adult, Neal continued to enjoy the same outdoor activities, enjoying ranching and travel. He was a physically active man and loved the sports of swimming and track/running.
Neal's father, James Edward MacKesson, remarried after his mother, Myrtle Davis MacKesson, died. Neal's step mother was Virginia Farrar MacKesson. Virginia and J.E. raised all of the MacKesson children.
