Sam was a son of Archibald S. Hanes and his wife, Elizabeth Titus. Sam married Laura A. Moore, one of fourteen children born to Jacob M. Moore and his wife, Catherine E. Carmichael. Their wedding took place on January 16, 1899 in South Webster (Scioto County), Ohio. They had ten children, seven sons and three daughters. Sam was owner, operator of Hanes Chevrolet Company in South Webster.
