HAROLD HANES
Harold Hanes, the son of Samuel E. Hanes and Laura Moore Hanes, was born in Bloom Township September 12, 1903, and died February 29, 1984. He had five brothers who grew to maturity, Floyd, Alva, Lester, Raymond and Carl, and two sisters and one brother who died in infancy.

The family lived on Gallia Street in Portsmouth for a short time and then moved to a farm at Pinkerman. Harold attended Pinkerman Grade School and was graduated from South Webster High school and Portsmouth Business College.
On June 12, 1929, Harold married Elizabeth Simmering, daughter of Fred H. and Katherine (Kate) Simmering. They had no children. Harold's first job was in the office of Harbison-Walker at Star Yard and later he was office manager for his father-in-law, who had the Ford agency at South Webster. He was a sales tax examiner for the state of Ohio, served as clerk of the Village of South Webster and was elected on the Democratic ticket for county recorder for the first of four terms in the state, in 1936.
He was re-elected each four years there after and served as county recorder until his resignation Jan 31, 1984.
Harold was recognized by the Ohio Recorder's Association for having served in that office longer than any recorder in the state of Ohio and was presented a plaque on Law Day 1983 from The Portsmouth Bar and Law Library Association in recognition of outstanding service.
He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, South Webster, the Elks, Kiwanis, and Scioto Farm Bureau.
