Mrs. Minnie Cowles Rice, 83, of 310 Walnut St., with of Frank S. Rice, died at 8:10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, 1940 after a brief illness. She was a daughter of the late Dr. Augustus W. Cowles, first president of Elmira College. She was a member of the Park Church, the local branch of the American Association of University Women and Elmira College Club of Chemung County. She leaves a son, Augustus Cowles Rice; a granddaughter, Miss (name redacted for privacy); a nephew, (name redacted for privacy) all of Elmira. The body was removed to the Smith and Fudge funeral home and Wednesday morning will be taken to the home of her son, 909 W. Water St., where funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m., the Rev. A. G. Cornwell officiating. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.
