Louis Besson was born in French Canada. As to his birth year, records are quite variable, ranging from July 1827 from the 1900 U.S. Census to 1824 on his Washington Death Certificate. Louis Besson seemed to have arrived in the U.S. about 1831. The “1860 Minnesota Compiled Census and Census Substitutes Index, 1835-1890” on Ancestry.com shows a Louis Besson living in New Canada Township in Ramsey County, Minnesota. This may or may not be our subject person.

By 1889 Louis Besson was living in Pierce, Washington according to the “Washington State and Territorial Censuses, 1857-1982” on Ancestry. The page is difficult to read but it looks like Louis Besson (60) was a miner, born in Canada. His wife Margaret was 25 and a housewife, also born in Canada. There are 2 children listed, Martha, age 6, and Louis age 10. Both were born in Minnesota.

The 1900 U.S. Federal Census shows Louis Besson, age 72, and his wife Margaret living at 1911 South G Street in Tacoma, Pierce, Washington. Nearby at 1909 South G Street lived his stepdaughter Victoria (Proulx) Hewitt and her family. Lewis W. Besson was listed in Ancestry's “U.S. City Directories, 1821-1989” as living at 1904 1/2 S Tacoma Av in 1901, occupation stone mason. Above that entry is one for “Lewis W. Besson jr, ice puller, Tacoma Ice Co., bds 1904 1/2 S Tacoma Av.”

According to further Tacoma directories, Louise Besson changed his occupation to shoemaker. However, in the 1910 U.S. Census, he called himself a contractor. More significantly he was living alone although the census indicates he was married for 21 years, which doesn't quite fit in with the ages of his children. More likely his marriage was about 1878. His wife Margaret was living with her daughter Victoria and son in law Edmond Hewitt. Margaret died in 1913. Louis continued to be listed as a shoemaker until 1916 when he was about 91. By 1915 he also was now living with Victoria (Proulx) Hewitt at 1602 South G, Tacoma, Washington.

Louis Besson died May 17, 1922, in Tacoma, Pierce, Washington.
