Maj. Dean was the son of Russell and Louisa Ann (Alsup) Dean of Huntsville, AL.
He enlisted as Sergeant, in 1861, with the Marshall county riflemen at Chulahoma, Mississippi, and was soon assigned to the 19th Mississippi Regiment of Infantry, in the army of North Virginia in the Confederate States of America Army during the Civil War. During his service he rose to the rank of Major before the end of the Civil War.
He married Lucy Ann Langston, daughter of Anner(Hudspeth)and John McClure Langston on February 2, 1864 and retired to a quiet farmers life in Lafayette County after the war. He served as Decon in the Glenville Primitive Baptist Church where he was married. In 1878 he served one term in the state legislature. In 1886 to 1896 he was a member of the Senate and held other positions as Senator.
After retiring to private life he was called by Gov. A.H. Longino to serve as a committee member to supervised the creation of the new State Capitol, 1900-1903. He served in the state Senate from 1908 to 1912. This was his last public service before his death at age 75 yrs. 10 mos. 20 days which is stated on his marker.
