Ada E. Bishop Coleman was the daughter of Volney Reynolds Bishop and Sarah, maiden name unknown. Ada was born ca. August 1842 in Cayuga Co., New York, in either the Town of Moravia or the adjacent Town of Scipio. Her parents removed to Owego, Tioga Co., New York ca. 1848. By 1860, they had moved once again and were censused at Elmira, Chemung Co., New York, where Ada's father was a Tobacconist. Ada married Harry Coleman on 26 January 1864 at Washington, DC. Their first child, Harry L. Coleman, was born at Washington the same year. Ada's mother, Sarah Bishop, moved to Washington that year, if not before, perhaps to assist with her new grandchild. Ada's father, Volney, apparently remained at Elmira to run his business until his death in 1865. Ada and Harry had two more boys, Arthur Burr Coleman and Davis C. Coleman, before Ada's death in 1870. Ada died only a few days after she was censused with her family, mother, and sister, Lucy, at Washington.
