Henry H. Bishop was the son of Volney Reynolds Bishop and Sarah, maiden name unknown. He was born in Cayuga Co., New York, either in the Town of Moravia or the adjacent Town of Scipio. Henry's parents were in Scipio during the mid-1840s. By 1850, Henry's parents had moved to Owego, Tioga Co., New York and by 1860 had relocated to Elmira, Chemung Co., New York. Henry apparently remained behind in Owego where he appears as a Telegraph Operator in the 1860 census. Henry enlisted in the Army at Elmira on 15 August 1862 where he mustered in as a Private in Company K, 141st Regiment, New York Infantry on 20 August 1862 and was promoted to Corporal on 11 September 1862. Henry is also listed as mustering in to the 60th Regiment, New York Infantry on 10 September 1862 with no company assignment. This may be a clerical error because Henry appears in the records of the 141st Regiment through the Civil War. Henry was detailed to the Ambulance Corps by Jun 1863 and seems to have served there until August of that year when he was listed as sick in the Chesapeake General Hospital at Fort Monroe, Virginia. In January 1864, Henry was furloughed to the United States Military Telegraph Corps and served there until mustered out as a Private on 25 October 1865. Henry remained in Washington, DC where he was employed as a Telegraph Operator following the Civil War. He married Minnie Reinhard on 24 November 1868 at Washington, DC. Henry continued to work as a Telegraph Operator, including for a fire alarm company, until 1874 when he is listed as a Clerk. Henry and Minnie resided at 1232 8th Street NW from at least 1871 until Henry's death in 1874. Henry and Minnie had two known children: Raymond V. Bishop, who died as an infant, and Henry Percy Bishop, who died shortly after Henry.
