Tuesday, January 13, 1903 - Patriot (Harrisburg, PA) - Dr. Eli H. Coover Dead - Expired at His Home at Three O'clock This Morning - Dr. Eli H. Coover died this morning at 3 o'clock at his home, 213 Locust street. He had not been in good health for a year, but his sickness was not considered serious until several weeks ago. The attending physicians were unable to find any organic disease and death was thought to be due to a general breakdown. Doctor Coover was the seventh son of Jacob and Anna Coover, and last Autumn he attained the seventy-fifth anniversary of his birth. The doctor's early education was received in the Allen township, Cumberland county school, and later he entered the Mechanicsburg High School, under Dr. Augustus Vanhoff, and later under Dr. Andrew Miller he took up the study of medicine, subsequently attending Jefferson Medical College, from which he was graduated in 1850. From the latter year and up to 1869 he practiced his profession in New Cumberland, removing thence to Harrisburg. He soon gained prominence in his profession and was one of the founders of Cumberland County Medical Society. He became a member of Dauphin County Medical Society on his removal here, of the State Medical Society and of the National Association, and was one of the organizers of the Harrisburg Academy of Medicine. Dr. Coover was twice married, his first wife whom he wedded in 1851, was Miss Annie Hummell, daughter of David Hummell of this city who died in 1889, and who became the mother of two children, Dr. David H. Coover, oculist, of Denver, Colo., and Dr. Harry R. Coover of this city. His second wife, whom he married twelve years ago, was Miss Elsie Coover of Johnstown, Pa. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of this city. At one time Dr. Coover took a somewhat prominent part in Republican politics. He had large real estate holdings in Harrisburg, and was a stockholder in the Harrisburg Bank, the Harrisburg Trust Company, the Central Guarantee and Safe Deposit Company, the Chestnut street and Verbeke street markets.
