John J. Frank, 81, Altoona, died unexpectedly Wednesday at Altoona Regional.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late John and Eva (Horell) Frank. He married Mary C. Gates on June 13, 1953, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years; a son, Gary (Clare) of Yardley; two daughters: Janice Sestini (Dr. Charles) of Wexford and Kay Tate of Altoona; a son-in-law, Scott Stevens of Bloomington, Ill.; 11 grandchildren: Joseph, Jonathan (Stacie) and Stephanie Tate, Julia, Mark and Leah Sestini, Matthew and Ryan Stevens and Madelyn, Lauren and Brian Frank; three brothers: William (Janet) and Vincent, both of Altoona, and Thomas (Anita) of State College; and two sisters: Jane Steinbugl of Altoona and Marge Frantz of Mechanicsburg.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Beth Stevens, on Nov. 13, 2010; a sister, Eleanor; and a brother, Walter.

John was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired from Veeder-Root Co. as a quality control technician after 38 years of service. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a lifetime member of the Bavarian Aid Society, Unter Uns and Swiss Club.

John was an avid bowler and enjoyed all sports, especially baseball and golf. After retiring, he enjoyed woodworking.

Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1833, Merrifield, VA 22116-8033; U.S. Renal Care of Altoona, 118 E. Chestnut Ave., Altoona, PA 16601; or Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
