One of three children born to Lancelot Hemsworth and Ann Crump of Limerick, Ireland, husband of Mary Ann Fenton Hemsworth, and father of Grace Ann, Lucy Day Crump Fenton, John Crump, and Charlotte Emily Hemsworth.

In 1841, John, Mary Ann and daughter Grace were living in Woodbridge, Suffolk where John was a Sergeant with the 54th Regiment.

His son, John Crump Hemsworth, was born in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland on April 26, 1851.

Arriving in Canada around 1853, John was a shown as a school teacher and farmer in Richmond, Quebec on the 1861 census and a Pensioner in 1871.

He died between 1873 and 1881, as he was a witness on his daughter Lucy's marriage in November of 1871, appeared on the 1871 census, was a witness to the marriage of his son John Crumpe Hemsworth and Elizabeth Price 1873, and on his wife's burial record for St. Ann's Cemetery on 9 Jan 1881 she was described as the wife of the "late John Hemsworth". There was a John Hemsworth, born about 1806, who died in Tralee, Ireland in 1876 at the age of 70.
