James was the son of George Washington Crew and Eliza Childs. He was born about 1847 in Georgia.

He enlisted in 1864 and was a Private in Company C, 34th Alabama Infantry. He was captured 28 Dec 1864 in Egypt, Mississippi. From his capture he was taken to Memphis, Tennessee. He was then transferred from Memphis, Tennessee to Alton, Illinois on 17 January 1865. He died in Alton Military Prison on 24 February 1865 of diarrhea.
