James was survived by his wife, Irene Lampkin; son Jimmy "Bo" Lampkin, and wife, Rebecca; daughter Judy Melton and husband, Randy; daughter Glenda Stephens and husband, Ronnie; daughter Norma Fulps and husband, Ricky; daughter Becky Champion, and husband Brian; daughter Janet Weeden; and daughter Kathy Pemberton. He was also survived by brothers Raymond, Doyal, Herschel, Willis, and Paul Lampkin; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
James lived in Balch Springs.
