Fayette Caruthers of Yazoo City, was born November 20, 1870, at Frederickstown, Mo., and is the son of David Looney Caruthers and wife, Mary (Britton) Caruthers. His ancestors came to America from Scotland and settled at Charleston, South Carolina, thence to Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. The father of the subject of this sketch was born in 1795 and was a soldier of the army of General Jackson at New Orleans. Dr. Caruthers attended the primary schools of Madison County, Mo.; entered the University of Missouri but did not graduate; enlisted in Company A, Third Missouri Cavalry, C.S.A.; served as First Lieutenant; July 28, 1861*, was taken prisoner; released from Johnson Island prison June 16, 1865; studied dentistry in 1866; practiced until 1870; since that time engaged in planting; member Board of Supervisors of Yazoo County in 1880; elected to the Legislature in 1892 and re-elected in 1895 and 1903. Dr. Caruthers is a Democrat; has served on County Committee; member of the Methodist Church, steward; was married January 18, 1869, to Virginia Emily Swayze, daughter of William Swayze and wife, Mary Ann Cousins, of Natchez, Miss. Mrs. Caruthers is a descendant of Rev. Samuel Swayze, a pioneer Mississippi Methodist minister.
