Joseph C. Canty was born Apr 17, 1909 in Taunton to Charles E. and Ellen V. (McGann) Canty. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1926 and enrolled in classical studies at Boston College. After graduating from there in 1930spent another four years of theological preparations at St. Bernard's Seminary in Rochester, NY and was ordained into the priesthood May 26, 1934 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Fall River, MA.
He served at Our Lady of Isle Parish in Nantucket, Holy Family in East Taunton, St. Vincent's Home in Fall River and St. Mary's in Norton. In 1935 he was assigned to St. John's Church in Attleboro and during WWII was commissioned into the Naval Chaplain Corps in Jan 1942, serving for 21 years. He was stationed for 18 months on the USS Lexington at sites Gilbert Islands, Palau Island, Saipan, Tinian and was present at the capture of Guam. He was promoted to assistant pastor of the entire Pacific Fleet in 1947. His stateside duties included Boston's US Navy Recruitment Center Atlantic Region Military Sea Transportation Service and was senior chaplain to the Naval Air Station at Newport, RI, the Second Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, NC, the Naval Hospital at St. Albans, Long Island and with a rank of Captain assigned as Force Chaplain to the staff of the Chief of US Naval Forces stationed in Europe.
Father Canty was elevated to the rank of Monsignor in May 1962. He retired from the Navy in 1963 and was appointed pastor of St. Paul's Parish, Taunton on Dec 27, 1963.As pastor he formed a Parish Council, supported scouting and sports activities and established training of Sunday school teachers at Stonehill College.
In Jun 1965 he enlarged the church structural area by 64%, installed 14 double-hung stained glass windows, replaced the 61-year old belfry bell with an electronic 12 bell-toned carillon, added a fully equipped kitchen to the basement area, and upgraded all utilities. One of the most visual upgraded was the painting of the church's exterior cedar shingles from a six-decade shade of dark green to a more appealing pearl gray.
Msgr. Canty retired in 1978 to South Dennis, MA. He died Aug 22, 1980 at Charlton Hospital, Fall River after a brief illness. A Pontifical Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Paul's Aug 26, 1980 by Bishop Cronin of the Fall River Diocese.
