DEATH CLAIMS REV. FATHER STEINBRECKER (sic)
Retired Priest Was Born at Cooperstown 62 Years Ago. Funeral Tuesday
The Rev. Father Francis Xavier Steinbrecker, for years pastor of the New
Holstein Catholic parish and widely known throughout Manitowoc county, passed
away yesterday afternoon at the Holy Family hospital, in this city, death
coming as a relief from years of untold sufferings through which he bore up
patiently. News of the death does not come unexpectedly though it is received
as a great shock by many county friends and those of his parish at New Holstein.
Father Steinbrecker retired from active work last December. During the last
year he has suffered constantly, being a patient at the local hospital from
June of last year until November, at that time going back to his duties at New
Holstein. The rally proved short lived, however, and he was forced to resign
completely from his work and return to the local hospital, where he has been
a patient since the first of the new year.
Life History
Father Steinbrecker was born at Cooperstown, June 3, 1865, and entered St.
Francis Seminary at the age of 18 years. In June, 1884, he completed his classics
and philosophy and went to Europe where for two years he studied theology at
Salsburg, Austria, later going to Innsbruck, Tyrol, where he completed his work
in 1888. He was ordained to the priesthood at Feldkirch, Voralbeg, Tyrol, Austria,
on March 12, 1888 and celebrated his first mass in the House of Loretto, Italy,
March 19, 1888. He returned to this country in the spring of that year, coming to
his birthplace, Cooperstown, where he conducted a mass celebration on June 13,
1888.
Surviving Father Steinbrecker is his stepmother, Mrs. Mary M. Steinbrecker, and
three brothers, Walter of Stephenson, Mich., Carl of Milwaukee, Eugene of Swanson,
Mich., and four sisters, Mrs. Mark Nachtwey, Maribel; Mrs. Nic Wegner, Maribel,
and Frances and Matilda Steinbrecker, of Milwaukee, and Mrs. Anna Steinbrecker,
widow of his brother, Henry.
Burial at Alverno
Father Steinbrecker took an active interest in affairs of his community and was
held in high regard where he was known. He was a member of the Leo society,
Eucharistic league, the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Foresters and Catholic
Knights.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at Alverno and burial will take
place in the convent cemetery there.
