Fred Bacon, 69, of Palatka, died Sunday, May 23, 2010, at his home after an extended illness.

He was a native of Smyrna, Ga., and lived in Palatka from 1974 to 1978, moving to Brandon, Miss., before returning to Palatka in 1981. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf and scuba diving. He worked for Kemper Insurance for 18 years in Georgia, Mississippi, and Jacksonville and also was past owner of Palatka Marine for five years. He owned Snap-On Tools in Palatka for 18 years and helped his sons in their businesses, City Shippers and Gottago Portable Sanitation.

He was preceded in death by mother and father, Octavia and Robert Bacon.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Tatum Bacon of Palatka; children, Greg Bacon and wife, Debbie, Gary Bacon and wife, KanDee, and Sherri Johnson and husband, Cary, all of Palatka; two brothers, Mitch Bacon and wife, Carol of Jacksonville and Mike Bacon and wife, Ann of Ormond Beach; sister, Nancy Stanley and husband, Philip of Smyrna, Ga.; six grandchildren, Alan Bacon, Austin Bacon, Lauren Bacon, Scott Bacon, Cole Johnson and Tucker Johnson, all of Palatka, along with several nieces, nephews, special friends and neighbors.

Friends may call Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka. Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, May 27, at the First Baptist Church of Palatka, with Dr. Kirby Kennedy and the Rev. Ray Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Palatka Memorial Gardens. In celebration of his life a memorial video will be shown.
