DR. W. P. SHAW
Dr. William P. Shaw, aged 65, Burgess of Berlin Borough and resident physician of Berlin for 40 years, died last Monday night at the Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md., following an operation two weeks ago. He had been in failing health for the last year. He was a patient at the Cumberland Hospital several months ago and returned to his home, but again entered the institution two weeks ago for a second operation.
Dr. Shaw was born at the famous stone house along the National Highway, near Grantsville, a son of George Shaw.
He received his early education in the Garrett County schools and taught school for a short time before entering the medical school of the University of Maryland. After graduating from that institution he located in Berlin, where he had since been engaged in the practice of medicine.
Dr. Shaw was a staunch Democrat. He served many years on the Berlin Borough School Board and the Borough Council, and two years ago was elected Burgess.
Dr. Shaw was a prominent figure in the religious, social and civic life of the Berlin community for the last 25 years. He was a member of the Reformed Church, and was active in the affairs of the congregation.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Harriet (Shaffer) Shaw, a native of Middletown, Md., and two daughters, Miss Mary Elizabeth Shaw, a nurse in training at the Cumberland Memorial Hospital, and Miss Helen Louise Shaw, at home. Two brothers and a sister also survive.
The body was prepared for burial by J.N. Johnson & Son, Berlin morticians. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at his late home. Rev. D. Snider Stephan, pastor of Trinity Reformed Church, officiated. Interment was made in the Shaw family plot in the Grantsville, Md., cemetery, in charge of the Meyersdale Masonic Lodge, of which Dr. Shaw was a member.
