Final Rites For Emily M. Carter Held Monday At Thor

Funeral services for Mrs. Emily Carter were held at the Thor Lutheran church, Monday afternoon, Mar.16, with burial in the Vernon cemetery, near Renwick. Emily Maybelle Rice Carter was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Rice of Renwick and was born Dec.18, 1880 in Grundy county, Iowa. She graduated from the Renwick High school in 1898, then worked in the Renwick post office. She was married to Martin Carter at Renwick June 15,1904. This union was blessed with seven children, one son, Earl, and one daughter Caroline Marsden preceded her in death, as well as her parents, and two brothers Will and Frank, and one sister Lillian and her husband in 1924. After her marriage she and her husband operated the hotel in Renwick for several years then a restaurant for many years. Following the death of her husband she moved to Ames so she could be with her children attending Iowa State College, in later years she made her home with her son Dr. Marion Carter and family.

She was ill about five months and passed away Thursday, Mar. 12,1959 in a hospital in Fairmont, Minn. She was brought to the Sacquety Funeral Chapel for arrangements.

Survivors are her five sons George of Billings, Mont, Craig of Fender, Neb., Marion of Fairmont, Minn. John and Lynn of Thor, four sisters Mrs Eva Olden of Seattle, Washington, Mrs. Nellie Owen of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Florence Overbaugh of Watertown S. D., Mrs. Helen Nicholson of Morning Sun and one brother, George Rice of Renwick, also
17 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Fifteen grandchildren attended the services as well as all of her children, and other relatives and friends.
