John was born in St. Jacques, Canada & came to Michigan's Upper Peninsula's Copper Country as a young man to work in the Calumet-Houghton areas. He also returned to Canada where he met his young bride of 16. The newlyweds arrived in Upper Michigan's Dickinson County in 1894 & were considered a pioneer family. Making Iron Mountain, Dickinson, Michigan their home they 1st lived in a log cabin behind Trader's Mine. On October 20, 1904 John bought the family home which was situated near Lake Antoine. They lived in this small house until a large one was built in the 1900s. They family of 12 children, 7 boys & 5 girls, all born in Iron Mountain, attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. John was an iron ore miner at Traders Mine & Ardis Furnace. John & his sons started the Goulette Brother's Ice Company which was a family endeavor. Funeral Of John Goulette, Sr. Will Be Held On Wednesday
John M. Goulette, Sr., 70, resident of Iron Mountain for the last 50 years & one of the few remaining pioneer citizens who was intimately associated with its earliest development, died at 11:30 last evening at home on Grand Boulevard following an illness of the last 2 years with heart trouble.
Mr. Goulette’s residence dates back to the year 1878 when, as a boy of 17, he arrived here to accept a position as a teamster, delivering powder or the Quinnesec, Florence & other iron mines in the district.
He was born at St. Henry de Mascouche, Canada.
He left for short periods of time to work & while a resident of here Rivers, Wis., he married Miss Jennie Gibauleau & then returned to Iron Mountain.
In 1935, he organized what is now the Goulette Brothers Ice Cream Company. He retired 3 years ago.
Beside his widow, 12 children survive: Mrs. John Elmer, Aurora, Wis.; Mrs. Frank A. Valenti & Misses Albina, Bella & Margaret; John Jr., Hector, Delor, Henry, James, Arthur & George, all of Iron Mountain. One brother, Joseph, also of this city.
Interment of will be in Cemetery Park.
