Edith M. Gleason
HEATH -- Edith M. (Marshall) Gleason, 93, formerly of 93 Route 8A, died Saturday (8-19-00) in Anchorage Nursing Home in Shelburne.
She was born in Methuen, Feb. 3, 1907, the daughter of Fred K.R. and Edith (Smith) Marshall.
She was a graduate of the former North Adams Normal School.
Gleason was an elementary school teacher in Hawley, Williamsburg, Heath and Rowe. She was also a private tutor for many students.
She was a member of the Heath Union Church for many years, and served as treasurer and Sunday school teacher.
She was past secretary of the Heath Fair, a member of the former Heath Grange and served as the town librarian for many years. For more than 40 years, she was caretaker of the Ethel P. Moors summer residence.
For many years she manned the Heath Fire telephone. Before dispatch centers, these telephones were the only link to homeowners and members of the fire department.
Survivors include two sons, Earl and Walter, both of Heath; a brother, Leland Marshall of Northboro; a sister, Audrey Dutton of Tabares, Fla., two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Heath Union Church. The Rev. Colin Lucid, pastor, will preside. Burial will follow in North Heath Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of the Heath Library, in care of Town Office, Main Road, Heath MA 01346. Smith-Kelleher Funeral Homes of Shelburne Falls and Greenfield, is in charge of arrangements.
