Porter Hudson McCulloch, son of Joseph and Harriet (Hudson) McCulloch, was born in Allegheny Township near Shears Cross Roads on his family's farm in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He worked at drilling in the oil fields of Pennsylvania until the fall of 1876 when at age 24 he moved to Kansas to join his friend John Parks. In 1886 he was in Kansas City, Missouri, where he spent the remainder of his life, working as a teamster. He married Laura Amanda McPike, daughter of James and Nancy Ann (Woolford) McPike, 30 April 1887 in Jackson County, Missouri. She was born 10 April 1863 at Bismarck, St. Francois, Missouri, and died 21 September 1903 in Jackson County, Missouri. They had daughters, Ethel, Irene, Luada, and Beatrice.
