Martin Jordan was the son of Moses Jordan and Mary Hayes of Co Carlow, Ireland. Mary Ann (Jordan) Brennan and Elizabeth Jordan O'Mara were his sisters, and his two eldest daughters were named for them.

He emigrated from Co Carlow, Ireland to Beckwith, Lanark County, Ontario in the 1830s and married Catherine Lawler on 15 Oct 1834 in Perth, Lanark County.

He and Catherine had at least 10 children, all born in Beckwith:

Mary Ann 1836-1934
William 1837-1919
Moses 1838-1930
James 1841-1926

John 1847-?
Margaret 1850-1920

Note on Date: The date on this stone is hard to read, and Martin's records are confusing. One death record says the 21st, the other says the 25th, and his burial record from the church says he was buried on the 23rd.

Inscription

Pray for the
soul of
Martin Jordan
died Sep. 2?, 1887
aged 77 years
May his soul rest in peace.
Dear is the spot where Christians sleep,
How sweet the strains their memory bore,
Oh, why should we in silence weep,
They are not dead but gone before.
