Louis was born in Utah of pioneer ancestors. He began raising cattle at an early age and over the years, he became a well known cattleman of the Peterson Bros. Herefords with his brother, Rulon, in Roy, Utah, and Elko, Nevada. He raised purebred Herefords throughout the western states and won many awards for his championship cattle. He was also known as Grassman of the Year for his work in developing a beautiful 25,000 acre ranch in Nevada. He and Dorothy lived in Nevada raised a family of 3 children in Elko: Donna, Jay, and Janet Peterson.
Louis and Dorothy were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Louis was a counselor in the Humboldt Stake and managed the church ranch for the Stake of the church.
