Mary's early life is unclear. Family members were told that Mary's mother died of breast cancer when she was four years old. They report that her father left her in an orphanage following the death of her mother. However, there was a Mary Freund who died from pleurisy when Mary was nine years old. And there was a father and a daughter living together that fits Mary's name and age in Louisville, KY. Also, there was a family in Evansville who employed a servant by the name of Mary Friend at the age of 19 (the time frame would be the same as Mary's age). Family lore has it that Elhanan found Mary in an orphanage in Louisville and brought her to live in Evansville. More investigation is required. Mary's heritage is German. She used many words and sayings from her parents native language. Mary married Elhanan Winchester Hunt on September 27, 1883 in Evansville, IN.

Mary was a seamstress and worked for many wealthy families. She gave four of her eight children middle names that were the surnames of the families she worked for in Evansville. Mary's children were Georgia Ethel, Thomas Nathaniel, Ama May, Mary Catherine 'Pete', Charles Costello, Belle Iglehart, Andrew Keck 'Jim', Clarence Hinkle 'Babe'. Mary was known to have a good sense of humor. She died at the age of 64 years.
