WAUTOMA – Mrs. Frank (Irene) Souder, 82, was stabbed to death in her rural farmhouse on October 25, 1969. She was found in her dining room Saturday about 4 p.m. by her daughter, Mrs. Louis Bednarek, who lives in a farm house about one mile east of the Souder home.
Mrs. Souder, who lived alone, had just moved back to her farm home four miles southwest of Wautoma on September 1. Prior to that for the past four years she had lived in an apartment in Wautoma and was a familiar sight walking down Main Street with her cane, after taking meals at Bea's Restaurant. The family last saw her alive when they returned from a shopping trip to Wautoma Friday evening about 9 p.m. Her grandson, Phillip Bednarek, carried the groceries into the kitchen for her.
Known only as "Grandma" to many, Mrs. Souder was a resident of the town of Wautoma for 61 years. The former Auguste Pauline Henke, she was born May 29, 1887, in the Township of Crystal Lake, Marquette County, the daughter of German immigrant parents, Gustav and Guste Henke. She resided at the family farm in rural Neshkoro in her youth.
On December 2, 1908, she was married to Frank Souder at Neshkoro and moved to the rural Wautoma farm. In time she took over full management of the farm while her husband ran a sawmill or was involved in threshing or hulling clover. For almost 20 years she was a regular employee of the Chicago Pickle Company.
She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, a former member of the Royal Neighbors, and a charter member of the Parker Valley Homemakers Club. Her daughter, Mrs. Bednarek, said that Mrs. Souder looked forward to planting a garden in the spring and to painting and fixing up the farm home she had just moved back to. She was in good health except for a fall on the ice about three years ago which necessitated her using a cane when she walked outside. She didn't have a dog, but she had just obtained a little black kitten which amused her.
Preceding her in death were her husband, concluding 51 years of marriage on August 14, 1959; two infant daughters, Elva and Ruby, her parents of Neshkoro; a brother, Herman Henke, Neshkoro; four sisters, Mrs. John Powers, Mrs. Albert Schultz, Mrs. Arthur Hensel, Ann, and one grandchild.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Souder Tuesday at the Grace United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Norman Silvester and Reverend George Weix officiating. Burial took place in the Wautoma Union Cemetery.
