MRS. H. F. TARBOX, 87, DIED AT HER HOME TODAY

Mrs Elizabeth Lord Tarbox, widow of Major Henry Fisk Tarbox and a prominent and highly esteemed resident of Batavia, died at 10:45 o'clock this morning at her home, No. 400 East Main street, after a protracted illness.

Mrs Tarbox was born at Kirtland, Lake County, O. on August 28, 1849, the only child of Asa D. Lord, M D., and Elizabeth Watson Russell Lord. Dr. Lord was a pioneer in educational work in Ohio, first as principal of the Western Reserve Teachers Seminary at Kirtland and subsequently as the organizer and first superintendent of the Public schools of Columbus, as state superintendent of schools and as superintendent of the Ohio school for the Blind, being called from the last named position in I868 to organize and become the first superintendent of the State School for the Blind in Batavia, where his death occurred on March 7, 1875. At various times Dr. Lord was editor of four different educational journals and in 1872-74 was president of the American Association of Instructors of the Blind. He was succeeded as superintendent of the Batavia institution by his widow who resigned in September, 1877 and later was appointed to the position of assistant dean of women at Oberlin (O.) College.

Mrs. Tarbox was a graduate of the Columbus (O) High School and of Mrs. Bryan's Seminary, a well known school for girls in Batavia. Her marriage to Major Tarbox took place at the State School for the Blind on July 21, 1870, and shortly afterward she began housekeeping in the home where she died Mrs. Tarbox was honorary regent of Deo-on-go-wa Chapter, D. A. R., and honorary president of the Genesee Presbyterian Society and the woman's society of First Presbyterian Church of Batavia. Her memberships also included the Local History Club, the Conversation Class, the Shakespeare Club, the Woman's Hospital Association, the Y. W. C. A., the Holland Purchase Historical Society and the Ware Class of the Presbyterian Church. She also was a member of several patriotic and genealogical organizations including the Society of Mayflower Descendants. All of her married life Mrs. Tarbox was active in the affairs of the Presbyterian Church and she was one of the oldest members.

Mrs Tarbox is survived by a son Russell Lord Tarbox of No. 1165 Fifth avenue, New York; a daughter Mrs. John W. Lumbard of No.17 Lenox avenue, White Plains, and four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Katherine and Margaret Lumbard and Henry Fisk Tarbox. Another daughter, Miss Julia B. Tarbox, died in 1925. Three other children died in infancy.

Funeral services will be held from Mrs. Tarbox's late home at 3 p. m., on Monday. The Rev. Charles Chalmers MacLean. D. D., pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Batavia Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined.
