EO grew up in Tulsa but went to Grafton, MA for high school with the sponsorship of his older sister Axie and husband who lived in that area. He graduated from Harvard in 1930 and the University of Oklahoma medical school 4 years later and specialized in ob/gyn. He was blind in one eye from an accident in his youth which prevented him from serving in WWII but was a commanding officer in a National Guard unit. He owned is own practice in Tulsa and loved his profession, serving on call without pay 24/7 to the Salvation Army.
At the time of his death he was survived by 4 children he had from his first wife Kay, and by his 2nd wife who had two grown children that he adopted.
