Well known business owner Clifford L. “Hoopie” Watkins, age 79, of Ursa, IL passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 4th at his daughter’s residence in Ursa.

He was born May 7, 1931 in Adams, Illinois, the son of Delbert and Virginia McDaniel Watkins. On June 7, 1950 he married Gwendolyn Tournear in Palmyra, MO. She preceded him in death on November 3, 1995.

Clifford and his wife Gwendolyn “Wink” Watkins owned and operated the Hoop N Wink Restaurant in Ursa. He was baptized into the Methodist faith. He was a member of Quincy Masonic Lodge #296 A. F. & A. M., Quincy Consistory, Ansar Shrine and the Shrine Club Mini Mules. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 965, the Loyal Order of the Moose, was a member of Operating Engineers Local 965 for 35 years and was a Teamster. He and Wink loved to play poker and the slot machines, and they took vacations to area casinos and LasVegas.


Survivors include: his 3 daughters – Diana K. McCutcheon of Jacksonville, IL, Christine (Dave Daniels) Watkins of Quincy, Susan (Jim) Weyand of Ursa, IL; 6 grandchildren – Kimberly (Daniel) Faircloth of Perry, FL, Derek “Boomer” Purdy of Quincy, Tiffanee “Taffy”, Tanna, and Tawni McCutcheon, all of Jacksonville, IL, J. C. (Mariah) Weyand of Carbondale, IL; great-grandchildren – Kiley and Dakota Faircloth of Perry, FL; Brother – Robert (Irene) Watkins of Palmyra, MO; sister-in-law – Naydean Nebe of Quincy; his longtime employee, friend and confidant – Sherri Thomas of Ursa;

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Clifford L. Watkins, Jr., brothers, D. R. and Thomas Watkins, 2 sisters, Jane Finchum, Helen Roberts, and his faithful companion, Putter.

Services: 1:30 pm Wednesday at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Morwell officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation: 4-7 pm Tuesday at Hansen-Spear with 7pm Masonic services
