The younger brother of novelist Charles Dickens and a railway engineer, Alfred Dickens was the son of John Dickens and Elizabeth Barrow. Alfred married a lady named Helen and they had five children.

Alfred died from pleurisy. He was buried at Highgate Cemetery, near his father. His brother, Charles, is also buried there. He was the only one of Charles Dickens' brothers who was successful and who made something of his life.
