John Witherspoon, the only son of Samuel Witherspoon and Nancy Agnes Dobbins, was born October 6, 1795 at Cannonsburg in Washington County, Pa. He died Sept. 3, 1859 near Enon Valley in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. He married October 31, 1821 to Margaret "Peggy" Witherspoon, his cousin, a daughter of William and Mary Witherspoon. She was born July 17, 1799 and died October 20, 1867. Both John and Margaret are buried in Bethel Cemetery near where they lived.
He was a farmer, a Republican, and a member of the Bethel United Presbyterian Church. He served in the War of 1812 as a Private in the company commanded by Captain David Clark in the 138 Regiment of Pennsylvania Militia commanded by Col. Robert Miller. He enlisted on the 1st day of January, 1914, and was honorably discharged at Erie, Pennsylvania on March 12, 1914.
From a History of Lawrence County, Page 776, we learn that he moved when quite young to the woods of Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He located on the present Gilkey farm, in what is now North Beaver Township, Lawrence County, and later moved to the farm now [1968] occupied by his son, Samuel D. Witherspoon in Little Beaver, which they purchased from the Government. He made a clearing and erected a round log cabin for his mother, and later a hewn log house for himself.
