A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lagro, Wabash County, Indiana, January 27, 1864, and allegedly mustered into federal service that same day at Indianapolis as a private with Co. I, 46th Indiana Infantry. Almost immediately, he was detached to service with Varner's Battalion, a unit comprised of non-veterans from five Indiana regiments plus one each from Ohio and Illinois. That unit was assigned to the Department of the Gulf on March 2, 1864. Barbour was specifically assigned to serve with the 56th Ohio Infantry. Admitted to Nelson U.S. Hospital, Lexington, Kentucky, June 4, 1865, the army docked $19.26 from his pay to cover cost of transportation to the hospital, and then another $7.48 and, still again, an additional $1.48, same reason. It does not appear that he ever returned to duty with the 46th Indiana, and he is not found on the adjutant general's roster of Indiana regiments even though he has a compiled military service record.
He married Mary Ellen Kline August 10, 1873, and fathered Jacob Beattie (b. 11/27/72) and William Foster (b. 07/24/74). Mary Ellen died in 1875, and he married Haddessa E. Goodyear February 4, 1878, fathering M. Garfield (b. 04/24/80) and Levi Sadler (b. 12/18/84). Haddessa died in 1892, and he married Anna Elizabeth Arbegast December 19, 1901, in Cumberland County. Anna died, and he married named Mary Ellen Walter, née Chesnut.
Cause of his death is listed as "colitis probably carcinoma of rectum."
Sharp-eyed readers likely have noted that William's mother and his commanding officer were both Varners. A cursory search did not reveal any relationship, but perhaps a Varner genealogist might have some information.
