Murlin R. "Murt" Phillips, 76, Cairo, passed away at 11:27 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Methodist Hospital.

Mr. Phillips was a member of Cairo United Methodist Church. He retired from Peabody Coal Co. Camp No. 2 in 1992. He was a U.S. Army veteran, an honorary member of Cairo Volunteer Fire Department and a UK fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvie "Mott" Phillips and Mary L. Phillips.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Sharon Phillips; one son Brian Keith Phillips and his wife, Tammy, of Cairo; one daughter, Kim Palismo and her husband, Steve, of Agoura Hills, Calif.; two sisters, Opal Snider and Brenda Phillips, both of Cairo; one nephew, Ralph Snider and his wife, Clemma, of Lexington; three grandchildren, Lindsay LaRue and her husband, Charles, and Ashley Phillips, all of Cairo, and Justin Palismo of Agoura Hills.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Tapp Funeral Home. The Revs. Mark Jones and Michele Nally will officiate. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Cairo Volunteer Fire Department 13115 U.S. 41-Alternate, Henderson, KY 42420 or Cairo United Methodist Church.
