Died 5 January 2007.
Ray Andrew Ledford (aka "Ray the Barber") was received into the loving arms of Jesus on Jan. 5, 2007, at his Ojai residence. Ray first came to the Ojai Valley in 1968. He owned and operated Ray's Barber Shop for 25 years (first at the "Y" shopping center, then later on El Roblar Drive in Meiners Oaks). He was proud to have cut the hair of some well known individuals, including former President Jimmy Carter. His barber shop was a place to go not only for a haircut but also for a healthy dose of optimism and laughter. Those who knew Ray's friendliness, generosity and outgoing personality understood that he took a genuine interest in everyone he met. Ray was born in Hayesville, NC in 1931. He came to Southern California during the Korean War in connection with his service in the U.S. Army. After his service in the military, he attended Southern California College (now Vanguard University) in Costa Mesa, Calif., where he met and later married Bonnie Lee Dodds. Ray is survived by his children, Renee Garmon of Ventura, David Ledford of Red Bluff, Calif., and Daniel Ledford of Oroville, Calif.,; grandchildren, Ryan Schmidt and Cameron Schmidt of Ventura, and Gregory Ledford and Steven Ledford of Red Bluff; siblings, Robert Ledford of Canyonville, Ore., Reuben Ledford of Canton, Ohio, Reba Rigsbee of Oliver Springs, Tenn., Robenia Merritt and Rena Matheson of Hayesville, NC; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee Ledford; and siblings, Ralph Ledford and Ronda Ledford. Services and interment were conducted privately by Ray's family.
