World War I veteran, 13 April 1917-11 Nov 1918
Served in the Naval Railway Battery, No 1
According to "The United States Naval Railway Batteries in France", few artillery pieces were available when the US entered World War I. One step taken by the Ordnance Dept was to set 5 14" 50 caliber naval guns on railroad mounts. Each gun had its own train consisting of a headquarters, machine shops, kitchen, barracks, ammunition cars, cranes, fuel, etc. Batteries 1-5 were deployed to the Meuse-Argonne front; batteries 1 & 2 generally were operated with the French Army. The guns were based at St Nazaire and operated by Naval personnel under the command of Rear Admiral Chester Peshall Plunkett.
