Chesapeake - Evangelist Alice Bell "Dimple" Cann, 93, of the 3900 block of Rex Circle, died on May 8, 2012 in Portsmouth, Va. She was a native of Portsmouth and was the youngest and last remaining sibling of 10 children of the Bell Family. She was the widow of Rev. Malachi Cann and retired in 1989 after 30 years of service as a private duty nurse.
She was a member and an Evangelist at Fourth Baptist Church, Portsmouth. Other accolades include being a Co-founder of First Church of Deliverance and Co-founder of Jeffrey Wilson Community Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She received an evangelical certificate from C. H. Mason Bible College and was a licensed Missionary from Garden of Prayer Temple
She was a 1940 graduate of I. C. Norcom High School and attended Norfolk State College.
In addition to her husband, Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Annie and Walter Bell and nine siblings: Viola Felton, Mattie Smith, Margaret Council, Gladys Beasley, Louise Bell, Walter Bell Jr., Wilfred Bell, Louis Bell and James Bell. Survivors include three daughters: Gladys G. Williams of Chesapeake; Lillian P. Norman (Fred) and Carolyn O. Simon, both of Portsmouth; one son: Dennis S. Cann (Delois) of Yorktown, Va.; grandchildren: Katherine H. Coleman, Kevin R. Reid, Carl R. Reid, Linda R. Chambliss, Carla A. Jamison, Katrina Y. Chambliss, Christopher R. Lyles, Harvetta A. Lassiter, Krystal D. Johnson and Denise Y. Cann; 29 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends; one brother-in-law, Monty M. Cann and one sister-in-law, Caretha G. Cross.
A wake service will be held on Sunday, May 13 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 14, at 11 a.m. at Fourth Baptist Church, 726 South Street, Portsmouth with Rev. Dr. Charles W. Beamon presiding. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. Corprew Funeral Home is in charge.
