Maude Mae Bakke was born in Culbertson, Montana, October 1st, 1899. She was one of seven children born to Esther Schaap and Winfield Scott Evans. She grew up on her father's farm located 15 miles east of Culbertson. Maude attended school in Culbertson and graduated from high school in 1917. She then attended Normal School in Dillon and received her teaching certificate. In the few years that followed, she taught school in eastern Montana. On July 15, 1921 she married Harry Claire in Wolf Point. They made their home and raised their family in Wolf Point and Maude served as high school librarian for 17 years. On October 19th 1954, she married Lloyd Bakke in Circle. They moved to Lloyd's farm south of Gildford where they lived and worked until their retirement in 1973. They moved to an apartment in Rudyard in 1984. Following a two-year stay in the Chester rest home, Lloyd died on Feb. 22. Maude became ill Sunday, Mar. 6, and was admitted to the Chester hospital. She died the following day, just two weeks after her husband's death. She was 88 years old.

Her survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Balzer (Duane) Lowenstein of Las Vegas, Nevada; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jane Cooper of Wolf Point and Mary Evans of Chester. Maude was preceded in death not only by her parents and husbands, but also by her son, Elwin, and four siblings, Mabel, Viola, John and George.

Memorial service at Rockman Funeral Chapel in Chester. Maude was cremated per her wishes, and her cremains will be buried in the family plot at Culbertson.
