"Mrs. Agnes McWhirter Clifford died Tuesday afternoon at 4:40 o'clock at her home on Clifford Street, aged 71 years. Mrs. Clifford was one of Winooski's pioneer residents, coming to Winooski from Ireland over half a century ago and living here ever since with the exception of 21 years' residence in West Alburg. She married 50 years ago in Colchester, Robert Clifford, who died seven years ago. Mrs. Clifford died of dropsy after a long illness which became worse a few weeks ago, culminating in her death. She leaves six daughters and two sons as follows: Mrs. Horace Thoams, Mrs. Thomas Wardwell, Mrs. Morris Smith, Misses Lizzie, Sarah, and Margaret, George Clifford of St. Albans and Samuel Clifford. She has 19 living grandchildren and one great grand child. Two sisters, Mrs. Stewart of Rutland and Mrs. Billings of Salisbury also survive her. Mrs. Clifford was a member of Holy Trinity church, being one of the organizers of the society. She had the honor of coming across the Canadian line in the first passenger train which entered the United States from Montreal. The deceased was a remarkable woman in many respects. She was a great reader and her memory was more than ordinarily retentive. Her character was also singularly sweet and she will be greatly missed by neighbors, friends, and relatives. The funeral takes place this afternoon at Trinity church." - Burlington Free Press, 28 Jul 1989
