Dr. Alfred Randolph (Randy) Garnett of 1505 Powhatan Court, a well-known obstetrician and gynecologist, died Monday in a hospital. He was 69.
Garnett, a native of Norfolk, was a son of Theodore Stanford and Eleanor Randolph Garnett. He was a grandson of the Right Rev. Alfred Magill Randolph, the first Episcopal bishop of the Southern Diocese of Virginia, and Sallie Hoxton Randolph.
He was the husband of Gretchen Ahlswede Garnett.
Garnett attended Norfolk Academy and the Episcopal high school in Alexandria. As a young man he taught French at Woodbury Forest High School in Alexandria, where he also served as an assistant football coach.
He earned his undergraduate degree in 1935 at the University of Virginia. At the university he played quarterback on the football team for three years, at which time he was popularly known as the Fox.
He received his medical degree from the university in 1940.
Garnett's first residency was in 1941 at Garfield Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. He served his second residency in 1949 in obstetrics and gynecology at the Woman's Hospital of the State of New York in New York City.
During World War II, Garnett served as a flight surgeon with the 8th Air Force, based at Shrewsbury, England.
After the war, he began a private practice in Norfolk in obstetrics and gynecology. In November 1981, he retired from private practice and joined the staff of Obstetrical and Gynecological Associates of Tidewater.
In 1957, Garnett was named a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
He was currently a member of the Atlantic Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology and had served as a past president of the Virginia Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
At one time, Garnett was considered one of the top-ranking sailors of pleasure craft on the Chesapeake Bay, where his boat "Old Fox Trot" won many trophies.
He was a member and a past president of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.
Beside his wife, Garnett is survived by two sons, Dr. Alfred Randolph Garnett of Richmond and Benjamin A. Garnett of Charlottesville; a sister, Mrs. Richard Willing Ruffin of Norfolk; and a brother, Theodore Stanford Garnett of Norfolk.
The graveside service will be conducted at noon Wednesday in Elmwood Cemetery by the Rev James W Thompson. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, is in charge.
