NORFOLK - Gretchen Ahlswede Garnett, 90, passed away peacefully Dec. 25, 2007, in Norfolk. She was born in Pasadena, Calif., Nov. 9, 1917, the daughter of Katherine and Rowland Ahlswede. She graduated from Stanford University in 1939. During World War II, she served with the Red Cross in Africa and Italy. She worked for the U.S. Foreign Services in Chile for two years after the war, serving the less fortunate. She then returned to New York City and worked for the United Nations where she met and was married to her late husband, Dr. A. Randolph Garnett.
A Norfolk and Virginia Beach resident since 1950, she was a devoted member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, member and former vestryman of The Church of the Good Shepherd and a member of Galilee Church. She worked as a realtor from 1966 to 1996, served with the Women's Auxiliary of Norfolk General Hospital and was a member of the Westover Garden Club and the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.
She is survived by her sons, A. Randolph Garnett Jr., M.D. and his wife Connie of Norfolk and Benjamin A. Garnett, M.D. and his wife Becky and their son Max Randolph of Anchorage, Alaska; her sister , Joanne Grange of California; and many loving nieces and nephews and their families.
A memorial service will be held in the Church of the Good Shepherd Saturday at 1 p.m. with Bishop Charles Vache' officiating. Burial will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Women's Auxiliary of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital or the charity of the donor's choice.
