Mr. Yancey Lee "Yank" Payne, Cave Spring, passed away Saturday evening, September 29, 2012, in a Rome hospital. Mr. Payne was born in Floyd County. Mr. Payne was a veteran of World War Two, having served with the U. S. Army in the South Pacific. A member of the Community Chapel Baptist Church, Mr. Payne was a member of the Plumber's and Pipe Fitter's Union Local #72 in Atlanta after over 60 years, and was a retired farmer.
Funeral services for Mr. Payne will be held Tuesday afternoon. October 2, 2012, at 4:00 pm at the chapel of John House's Cave Spring Chapel Funeral Home with his brother Tom Payne officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Sanders Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday afternoon from 2:00 pm until the funeral hour. John House's Cave Spring Chapel directing.
Mr. Payne is survived by his wife, the former Nellie Jo Willingham, to whom he was married September 2, 1944; by his children, Mrs. Peggene Black, and her husband Gary of Powder Springs, Mrs. Martha Evans and her husband Quinn of Powder Springs, and Stanley Payne and his wife Sherry of Rome. Two brothers, Frank Payne of Cave Spring and Tom Payne of Powder Springs, one sister, Mrs. Betty Hunt of Marietta, eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson also survive.
Mr. Payne was the son of the late John L. Payne and the late Maude Victoria Huckaby Payne.
Besides his parents, Mr. Payne was preceded in death by four sisters, Mrs. Carrie House, Mrs. Gladys Morgan, Mrs. Allie Grimes and Mrs. Ruth (Herbert Brooks) Willingham, and by three brothers, John Arthur Payne, D. W. Payne and Jack Payne.
