Archibald Campbell 10th Earl of Argyll was baptized on 25 July 1658 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He married Elizabeth Tollemache on 12 Mar 1677 or 78 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He and Elizabeth were separated for several years before his death.

Archibald inherited several titles from his father Archibald in 1689. these titles include: 4th Lord of Kintrye, 11th Lord Campbell, 10th Earl of Argyll, and 10th Lord Lorne. From 1694 to 1703 he was Extraordinary Lord of Sessions, as well as Lord of the Treasury of Scotland. In 1696 he also received the titles of 3rd Baronet Campbell of Lundy, and Colonel of the Horse Guards. In 1701 Archibald received several more titles: 1st Viscount of Lochow and Glenyla Scotland; 1st Duke of Argyll; 1st Earl of Campbell and Cowall Scotland; 1st Marques of Kintyre and Lorn; and 1st Lord of Inveraray, Mull, Morvern, and Tirie.
