The Second Duke of Argyll.Renowned as a Statesman who helped to unite the Parliaments of Scotland and England in 1707. At age seventeen he was Colonel of a regiment, at thirty, General of Queen Anne's armies in Spain, he was Commander-in-Chief of the forces in Scotland. Fought at Ramillies, Oudenarde, Lille, Ghent and Malplaquet. He also defeated an army at Sheriffmuir, and again at Dunblane, 1715.Served under three sovereigns William III, Queen Anne and George II. He was created a peer of England with the title of Baron Chatham and Earl of Greenwich, was a Knight of the Order of the Thistle, a Knight of the Order of the Garter, and a Field Marshall of Great Britain.
