John L Briggs - Former counselor active in Boy Scouts.
John L Briggs of 27 Charlotte St died Thursday Feb 28 1988 at Community Hospital, where he had been a patient since Tuesday. He was born in Battle Creek and had lived in Mount Clememns, Fort Wayne, and Beloit Wisconsin before returning to live in Battle Creek and Kalamazoo areas. He attended the Chicago YMCA College and received a batchelor degree, then earned masters degrees from both Michigan State and Western Michigan Universities in counseling, guidance, and psychology. He was employed as a certified rehabilitation counselor for the state of Michigan from 1942 until he retired in 1976. Most recently, he and his wife owned and operated Glenna's Craft Haus on 960 NE Capital Ave. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and had several paid and non-paid positions for the organization. This month he had been recognized for 70 years of scouting activity. He also received the Silver Beaver Award in 1945, and was a member of the order of the Arrow Vigil level. He had formerly been a professor at Western Michigan University. He enjoyed flower gardening, and was a charter member and first president of Southwest Michigan Iris Society in Kalamazoo. He had hybridized four varieties of Iris. He also served on the Kalamazoo Historical Commission and was a member of the Kalamazoo Genealogical Society and American Psychological Association. He attended the Battle Creek Seventh-day Adventist Tabernacle. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Ida May McCauley in 1960. Surviving are his wife, the former Glenna Ruth Wrate; a son Stanley J Briggs of Trenton; four grandchildren; stepsons Dennis Todd of Battle Creek and Douglas Todd of Rohnert Park California; a step daughter, Kathy Bird of Salinas, California; six step grandchildren and three step great grandchildren.
