George Lowell Dolan, 83, died Jan 28, 1997, at his home in Rainier.
He was born Nov. 18, 1915, in Cortez, Colo, to William and Nora (Leatherman) Dolan. At the age of 15, he left Colorado for San Francisco, then went to Redding, Calif. He lived in Alaska from 1943 to 1948, returned to California, then lived in Bayfield, Colo, until coming to Oregon, where he had lived in Rainier for the last year and a half.
He worked as a log truck driver for 10 years with San Juan Lumber Co., caught wild horses for the rodeo and worked for the railroad in Alaska.
Mr. Dolan was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Bolivar off the coast of Guam. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served three terms as commander.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida, a sister, Velma Kolz, and five brothers, Justin, Eugene, Morris, Roann and John Dolan.
Survivors include four daughters, Lynetta Raymond of Tucson, Ariz., Debra Kramer of Rainier, Dixie Palmer and Dinah Jones, both of Durango, Colo; a son Lowell Dolan of Redding, a half-sister, Wilma Butner of Howard, Colo.; two half brothers, Kenneth Dolan of Denver and Walter Dolan of Camas, Washington; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to come to Mr. Dolan's home to eat, share stories and remember his life, from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Memorials may be made to a wildlife preservation fund of the donor's choice.
Cremation arrangements are done under the direction of Hankinson Grands Mortuary, Rainier.
I remember Uncle Lowell fondly. After my Dad died he was there for us kids up until the time we moved to Albuquerque, NM. I miss him very much.
When Uncle Lowell passed he was cremated and his ashes spread over the San Juan, Colorado Mountains, I suspect in the Durango area. This is per his daughter.
