The birth date above is from Martha's obituary. Family records say she was born September 27, 1866.

Martha was the middle of three daughters born to George Washington Kemp and Maria Barber. She also had an older brother.

Her father was the famous black slave brought to Leeds by General O.O. Howard toward the end of the Civil War.

The family, including the three daughters, later formed a Julibee singing troupe that toured New England annually, preforming "plantation melodies, dances and negro spirituals." Washington played the tambourine, Mary played the harp, and Martha and her sister Laura played banjo.

Her mother Maria died in 1901. At about 1909 her father sold his Leeds farm, and then possibly moved to Lewiston. He died in 1911.

About 1919 Martha and Mary Kemp moved to Monmouth, and purchased their home.

In 1921 Martha married Alfred Jotham. As they were both in their 50s when they married, there were no children by this union. They resided in Monmouth in the Kemp home. Mary and the third sister Laura tended to stay with them in the summers, and spent winters in Lewiston.

The Kemp residence in Monmouth was called "the Bungalow." It was a Cape-style house on Main Street very near to the railroad tracks. The property was noted for flower gardens, gravel walkways, a bird bath and a flag pole.

"Jerry's Garage," located immediately next door, was destroyed by fire in 1923. The Kemp home was badly scorched and some windows broken. From 1885 to 2006, Monmouth had at least ten major fires. "The Bungalow" survived until 2006. That year, then Leone's restaurant, it was lost to fire.

Martha died in a Winthrop nursing home.
