John's the birth year on the stone, as well as in his obituary, both appear to be in error. He was listed as 12 years old in the 1870 census. The birth date above is from the 1900 census, which seems much closer to right.

Not mentioned in the following obituary is that for many years John was a railroad section hand.

From the February 8, 1941 edition of
the Lewiston Daily Sun:

"MONMOUTH-- John H. Kemp, who had once been sold as a slave boy, died Friday afternoon at his home in Curtis Corner. Born in Virginia, February 12, 1864, he was the son of Washington and Maria Kemp. He had been a resident of Curtis Corner for 35 years.

"Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Margaret Kemp; three daughters, Mrs. Blanch Nash of Portland; Mrs. Etta Nichols of Lewiston; Miss Lottie Kemp of Curtis Corner; two sons, Maurice of Curtis Corner; and Henry of Monmouth; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Jotham of Monmouth and Miss Laura Kemp of Lewiston; and three grandchildren."
